Officially accepted into service in early 1942, the ZIS-3 replaced the previous 76.2mm gun - the M.1936. The M.1936 was an excellent weapon, but too heavy, complex and expensive for Soviet needs. The ZIS-3 was created by mating the gun from the M.1939 with the carriage of the 57mm ZIS-2 anti-tank gun. The ZIS-2 carriage couldn’t stand the power of the recoil from the 76.2mm gun so a muzzle brake was fitted. The ZIS-3 became the first Soviet field gun to be equipped with a muzzle brake.

The ZIS-3 was very well designed and simple to produce. It took 2034 hours to construct an M.1936 gun, 1300 hours to construct an M.1939 gun, but only 909 hours to make a ZIS-3. Over 48,000 ZIS-3 guns were produced during the war, and it was a mainstay of many countries artillery forces for a long time afterward. The ZIS-3 was a very lightweight gun for its size, and was used in a direct fire role about as often as it was used for indirect fire. The weapon served as a dual-purpose gun - capable of being used in an anti-infantry or anti-tank role. Soviet doctrine required all artillery pieces to be used as anti-tank weapons when the situation required; even if the guns had no armour-piercing ammunition they were expected to engage German panzers with high-explosive.

Despite being of a much smaller calibre than the standard German medium artillery piece (the 10.5cm leFH18 howitzer) of the war, the ZIS-3 outranged the German howitzer. The Russian gun weighed almost half as much as the German weapon, and had a much higher rate of fire. Of course, the 76.2mm shell didn’t possess the hitting power of the 10.5cm round, but by firing directly at the target Red Army gunners could put their shells a lot closer to the enemy -- compensating for the smaller size of the projectile.

The Germans called the ZIS-3 "Ratsch-Bum" because of it’s sound. These tanks entered service on the Eastern Front in late 1942. Tanks arriving through the Persian Corridor were issued to units deployed to the Southern Fronts participating in the battles for the Taman peninsula in the Northern Caucasus. Initially the M4A2 Sherman was not seen as suitable for Russian conditions by its new crews compared to the domestic T-34. However, the M4A2 Sherman vehicle soon proved quite effective as its campaigning continued. They soon became known as Emcha tanks, pronounced, Em-cha, because a 4 looks like the Russian letter ч–cha. The Emcha began to appear on all fronts in increasing numbers. 2007 M4A2 75mm armed Emcha tanks were delivered during the war. Combat soon found that the M4A2 Sherman tanks were much less prone to brew-up due to ammunition detonation than the T-34, but had a higher tendency to roll over in accidents or on rough terrain due to its much higher centre of gravity.

Interestingly the Soviets never complained about the Shermans propensity to burn quickly which, given they only got diesel engined Shermans, would lend credence to those who would suggest fuel was the major cause of the "Ronson" effect. The American-built M4A2 Sherman was often derided by Soviet propaganda as an inadequate armoured vehicle, but in reality it proved far more reliable than its Soviet built counterpart, the T-34. It had better optics, a powered turret traverse, carried more ammunition and was more spacious inside allowing the crew more room to operate. In addition the 75mm gun proved slightly superior to that of the T-34 tank's 76.2mm gun.

With lend-lease tanks ammunition supply was perceived as a problem. A number of Emchas were converted to carry the Soviet F-34 76.2mm gun as the M4M. However, it turned out there was no shortage of US 75mm ammunition, so there was little need to continue converting Shermans. The Red Army also received 2,095 M4A2 Emchas mounting the more-capable M1 76mm tank gun. The first 76mm-armed M4A2 Shermans started to arrive in Soviet Union in September and October 1944.

By 1945, some Red Army armoured units were standardised to depend primarily on the M4A2 Sherman Emcha and not on the T-34. Such units include the 1st Guards Mechanised Corps, the 3rd Guards Mechanised Corps, and the 9th Guards Mechanised Corps, amongst others. The Sherman was largely held in good regard and viewed positively by many Soviet tank crews which operated it. Compliments were made on its reliability, ease of maintenance, generally good firepower (especially the 76mm gun), and good armour protection. They particularly liked its auxiliary power unit (APU) which allowed them to keep the tank's batteries charged without having to run the main engine for the same purpose as was required by the T-34 tank.

The American Emcha tanks took an active part in the fighting during the winter and spring of 1945. M4A2 Sherman tanks from the 1st Mechanised Corps played an important part in the encirclement of Berlin in the northwest sector. American tanks also took part in the liberation of Prague with the 9th Guards Mechanised Corps. However, with a 160mm bomb weighing 40kg, lifting it up to the muzzle of a 3-metre-long mortar tube was hardly practical! It was redesigned as a breech-loading weapon. A recoil system was added, to prevent the shock of firing a 160mm bomb from driving the baseplate into the ground. Because of the weapon’s weight (more than a metric ton), wheels were added to allow it to be towed behind a vehicle. From his seat in the turret he quickly scanned to the left, where he thought it was fired from, and saw a likely copse of trees. He found he was grinning like a wolf as he knew the gunners would be scared after fumbling their first shot. The enemy unit they were punching through were freshly constructed from remnants of battalions falling back from the fury of the Soviet summer offensive, while his regiment knew their rough business.

As their tank continued to advance he ordered immediate action, “Gregory Gregorovich, shake up that stand of trees to the left with high explosive.” Then he lightly nudged the driver on the left shoulder to start angling across the burnt field to help guide the massive 122mm cannon onto the likely enemy positions. Vladimir checked through his vision blocks that the other tanks in his regiment were not having trouble, as they exited the village and straightened out their formation into the fields beyond.

He could see the angled gun shield slightly silhouetted against the sunlight and bushes just before his gunner obliterated the enemy gun in a giant explosion and dust cloud. These 122mm rounds were unforgiving, he remembered being told that they held almost 4 kilograms of high explosive and generated a thick cloud of fragmentation to turn their target into borscht. They truly did respond with a double bass against the German accordion.

As rifle and machine-gun fire began spattering from their heavy armour, the unit dismounted their desant troops. They then began to clear the position, with the help of their big brothers. Vladimir had time to look ahead along their route of advance and noted a few more nearby areas with obstacles that may need attention, they had to keep up their breakthrough, holding the fascists to the ground with bloody kicks. Vladimir had seen the brutality and devastation that had been sown during the Soviet retreat in 1941 and knew his unit would be key to return the favour to the Hitlerites during their renewed advance.

THIS PRODUCT CONTAINS:

4x IS-2 Tanks

2x ISU-122 Assault Guns

2x ISU-152 Assault Guns

4x SU-76 Assault Guns

3x BA-64 Armoured Cars

4x 57mm or 76mm Guns

1x Hero Shock Rifle Company

Complete A5 Flames Of War rulebook

1x Soviet "Start Here" Guide

2x Decal Sheets

12x Unit Cards

Supplied unassembled and unpainted.

After a few days of battle, rifle battalions would be reduced to the strength of a weak company.
