World War III - Soviet: 2S9 Nona-S SP Mortar Battery

The 2S9 NONA-S fills the same role for the Air Assault Battalion as the 2S1 Carnation SP howitzer does for the motor rifles, providing them with immediate indirect and direct fire support. It is an extremely light-weight self-propelled and air-droppable 120mm gun-mortar. It first entered service in 1981. The 2S9 NONA-S chassis is based on the aluminium hull of the BTR-D airborne multi-purpose tracked armoured personnel carrier.

The 2S9 NONA-S is fully amphibious and is propelled through the water by two rear water-jets. The 2S9 mounts a 120mm 2A51 gun-mortar in a two-man turret. The weapon is a hybrid between a mortar and howitzer. It is rifled, breech-loading and can engage in indirect and direct fire, as well as targeting armoured vehicles with its HEAT round.
