Description
Soviet Airborne Forces began using the ASU-85 airborne assault gun from 1959, replacing the older opened-topped ASU-57. Its primary role was as infantry support. It had only limited anti-tank capability compared to the heavier guns equipping the main battle tanks like the T-55 and T-62 of the time. Its main armament was the 85mm D-70 (2A15) gun, derived from the 85mm D-48 towed anti-tank gun, a much improved weapon over the World War 2 era 85mm fitted to the likes of the T-34/85 tank.
Each airborne division had one assault gun battalion with 31 ASU-85. The use of the ASU-85 in airborne operations became possible with the introduction of the powerful Mi-6 and Mi-10 heavy lift capable helicopters as well as with the high-capacity multi-chute and retro-rocket systems for fixed wing-drops.
From 1979, during the Soviet–Afghan War, the ASU-85 saw extensive combat with Soviet Airborne troops.
